Create with Hokucat
Make a wallpaper of your own.
Create a video with AI, or start with one of your own. Package it, then preview and apply it in Hokucat.
Start with a scene.
Give this prompt to Codex, Claude Code, or Grok Bot in an empty working folder. Change the setting, colors, or movement to suit your desktop. If you already have a video, skip to the next step.
Create an original 8-second desktop wallpaper called Quiet Tide. Use Python or FFmpeg to render a dark-blue horizon with soft moving reflections. Leave the top half quiet for desktop icons. Use no downloaded assets, logos, characters, text, or audio. Make the motion periodic over exactly eight seconds and omit the duplicate end frame. Export quiet-tide.mp4 as 1920 × 1080, 30 fps, H.264, yuv420p, with no audio track. Use FFprobe to report the codec, dimensions, duration, and streams. Check the transition from the last frame back to the first. Keep the source and video local.
AI helps with creation. Hokucat plays the finished media locally. The generated example is separate from the third-party PC works shown for testing in our previews. Authors and original pages.
Make an importable folder.
Download or clone the public Hokucat repository and open a terminal in its folder, or ask your coding assistant to run these steps there. You need Python 3 and FFmpeg, including ffprobe and the libx264 encoder.
To try the format first, run the public example with a new output folder. It generates an original eight-second video, a preview image, a fallback image, and the package information.
python3 examples/make-wallpaper.py "$HOME/quiet-tide"
Use your own video
Use a video you created or have permission to use and adapt. Replace the source path and credit below. The helper removes audio and makes the preview and fallback images from the video.
python3 examples/make-wallpaper.py "$HOME/my-wallpaper" --source ./quiet-tide.mp4 --attribution "Original video by Your Name"
The destination must be a new folder inside an existing directory. Existing files are not overwritten. Check the title, author, and source information before sharing your package.
This helper creates video packages. For a PNG/JPEG image package, follow the v1 manifest schema. View the public example.
Preview it. Then make it your desktop.
- Open Wallpaper Dashboard in Hokucat, choose Import…, and select the whole package folder.
- Preview your wallpaper and check the fit. If you use more than one display, choose where to apply it.
- Click Apply Wallpaper. Watch at least two full loops to check the transition between the end and the beginning.
You can create a package now. Trying it on the desktop requires an installed Hokucat review build; the public installer is not yet available. Preview updates.
What Package v1 supports.
PNG or JPEG, with a preview and a fallback image.
MP4, MOV, or M4V, played from local files.
This import format does not run general interactive Web or Windows Scene projects, receive live pointer or audio input, or connect to APIs or agents. Selected built-in or adapted wallpapers may have their own interactive features.
Inside the package
quiet-tide/
├── manifest.json
├── media/
│ ├── loop.mp4
│ ├── preview.png
│ └── still.png
└── rights/
└── assets.json
Keep manifest.json at the top level. It names the wallpaper, author, media, and rights file. The preview appears in the library; the fallback is a still image available if the video cannot play.
Record the attribution and usage, adaptation, and distribution permissions for each distinct media file in rights/assets.json. Local import requires usage: true. Keep distribution: false if redistribution permission is unconfirmed. A valid manifest alone does not prove that the media plays correctly; check the finished package in Hokucat.
Share your wallpaper
Share a preview and how you made it. Prompts, scripts, or a package are welcome too. You can share before trying it in Hokucat—just tell us what you have tested.
